Personally, I think we make pretty good use of plastic shopping bags, we collect them and use them to collect wet garbage. When we start to get to many, we use our cloth bags to bring food home.

Plastic garbage bags usually end up at H-Power so the issue would be does burning plastic contribute to air-pollution.

Environmentalist forced the C&C to install state of the art air scrubber when the facility was built years ago. If those scrubbers are still doing the intended job, there should be no problem.

What happens if the plastic goes to the land fill?

It lasts pretty much forever and obviously contributes to filling the land fill, but will it cause more problems than paper bags which would have to be doubled in order to hold most groceries.
